Michael & Monica | Backpacker Profile 3

Name: Michael Thoen & Monica Voldsund

Age: 31 & 34

Country: Norway

Thank you to you guys for giving us your time – you are our first couple!

So could you give us a quick introduction about yourselves?

We are Mike and Monica from Norway. We live in Oslo, but for the next year we will be travelling.

It all started when we travelled India a year ago and felt like we didn’t get to see as much as we would like in just a month. Right there on a beautiful beach in Goa, we decided that we wanted to travel the world for a year. So when we got home we started saving for our big adventure and quit our jobs.

We love travelling and we always have a trip planned ahead. For us travelling is about new experiences, new cultures, meeting interesting people and making memories together.

Our dream is to visit every single country in the world. It’s probably going to take us some time, but we are off to a good start. So far we have been to 28 countries and still counting.

Where are you in the world currently?

Right now we’re in Noosa on the Sunshine Coast of Australia.

When we got here the apartments was overbooked, so we got this amazing house all to ourselves! Complete luxury! Less then a week ago we shared a 5 squaremeter bungalow. I guess that’s the backpacker life!

We did a crazy adventure tour to Fraser Island with big trucks and driving on beautiful beaches for 110 miles.

We passed this beautiful spot on the way, called Rainbow Beach. The name is because of all the different colours the sand and the rocks are displaying. Almost magical!

Next stop is Byron Bay in a couple of days!

Where do you plan to get to this year?

The plan is to travel Australia until the middle of February. We are making our way down the east coast and will end up in Melbourne.

Then we are off to Asia, and will travel around for about 4 months. Asia is so easy to travel becuase of low prices on transportation, so we hope to cover a lot these months.

Our main goals for Asia is trekking in Himalaya, getting our divers license in the Philippines, attending a cooking class in Thailand and take surflessons in Bali.

After Asia we are going to USA for three months. We will do a massive roadtrip and cover as much of USA as possible. The plan is to rent an RV and just live in it for most of the time.

USA is huge, so we have to spend our time well.

Last we are going to Central and South America for La Vida Loca. It will be 4 crazy months, and we will be doing as much as we can. We will be dancing tango in Argentina, drinking Margaritas in Mexico, smoking cigars in Cuba and hiking in Peru. It will be awesome!

We are not sure where to spend christmas and new years. We would be greatful for tips how to spend the holidays!

What has been your all time favorite place?

Our all time favourite place is Barcelona. It’s a great city with everything you need. Great beach, shopping, food, architecture, culture and people.

We guess we problbly will fall in love with lots of new places throughout this year.

Could you share us your all time favorite photo you have taken travelling?

This is our all time favourite sunset. It’s in Palolem beach in Goa, India. This picture brings back special memories beacuse it was the night we decided to quit our jobs and travel the world.

What are your top backpacking tips?

Backpacking is all about a budget and spending your money the right way.

The best tip we can give is to try to save as much as you can on the small costs like food, buses and trains. Travelling around takes a lot of time. Do research and plan ahead!

If the hostel you’re staying at have a kitchen, be sure to use it! It will save you a lot of money! If you’re eating at a resturant, be on the lookout for great meal deals.

Remember that local drinks are cheaper than the imported ones.

Be sure to make backups of all your pictures and videos. A good tip is to make both a cloud backup, and a backup to an external memorycard or harddrive.

You don’t want to lose all your memories from the trip if your camera gets stolen or lost.

Oh, and remember to have fun! That’s actually our number one advice for a good trip!

Remember to plan ahead

Which thing should every backpacker carry with them?

Comfortable sneakers. Flipflops is great on hot days at the beach, but they will not get you far when hiking through the jungle or the mountains.

When you are walking with your heavy loaded backpack to find accomodation, you may sometimes be walking for hours. You will thank God for wearing your Nikes instead of your Converse.

Do you have any words of advice or inspiration for anyone undecided about travelling?

If you want to travel, you should just do it! There’s never a good time to leave your safe environment at home to explore the unknown. You just have to decide and take a leap!

When you travel you get to know yourself in so many different ways! If you are travelling with someone, you learn new things about eachother everyday.

Most relationships grow on these trips.

Travelling doesn’t have to be expensive. You just have to make yourself a budget.

There are five simple steps:

  1. Make a decision
  2. Set your budget
  3. Set a date
  4. Start planning
  5. GO!
