Max Leyerer | Backpacker Profile 2

Name: Max Leyerer

Age: 24

Country: Austria

Occupation: Travel Writer / Blogger

Thanks for finding the time to speak to us today Max,

Could you please give the readers a quick introduction about yourself?

I’m Max. Born and raised in Vienna. From an early age on I worked as a bartender during summer and used the money to travel.

After high school I lived in Cambodia for some time, working as an English teacher and travelled South East Asia extensively. The people I met and the experiences I made had a deep impact on me and that’s when I realized travelling was all I ever wanted to do. I started my website and set the goal to travel to all 196 countries in the world by the time I’m 33.

But it is not about ticking off places off a list. For me, it is about challenging myself to do things I never tried, see countries I haven’t been to and share it to people around the world.

Where are you in the world currently?

At home in Vienna, packing my backpack for my upcoming trip to Iran.

Where do you plan to get to this year?

Iran this week.

In the upcoming months mainly Eastern Europe and Northern Africa. The big trip I’m planning right now will take me to South America for some time, but I haven’t figured out yet where to go exactly.

I also intend to travel overland from Senegal to Liberia later this year.

What has been your all time favorite place?

Somalia – for the incredible friendly local people I met.

Philippines – for the beaches and islands.

Cape Town – my favorite city in the world, where I want to live some day.

There simply isn’t a single answer to this question.  Sorry 😛

Could you share us your all time favorite photo you have taken travelling?

While living in Phnom Penh I met up with some of my best mates, who were travelling around South East Asia that time. Together we went north to the 4000 Islands in Southern Laos.

The days we spent on Don Det Islands were among the funniest, relaxed and coolest of my life. Our sunset the last night absolutely killed it. I mean imagine sitting next to majestic Mekong river, drinking Lao beer, having your best mates around and the sky burns. Doesn’t get better! Wow!

What is your top backpacking tip?

Do not worry too much. People are generally friendly and if you trust your gut, you’ll be fine.

In terms of keeping costs low, I always try to book cheap flights. There are tons of blogs out there, telling you how to find and book ‘em. If you save a few hundred bucks on flights, you can go longer away or travel more often.

Which thing should every backpacker carry with them?

– Saying mobile phones isn’t allowed, be creative 😉

An empty bottle of water. I use it to collect sand and bring it back home. While you’re away you tend to not realize the color shades of it, but when you put different collections of sand next to each other you realize how different they are. I like that.

Do you have any words of advice or inspiration for anyone undecided about travelling?

Always put real life experiences over material possessions. You won’t care about stuff you have after a while, but amazing experiences never fade. So go out and live life.

What has been your favorite food whilst away?

Fresh caught fish. Always and every time.

What has been your favorite activity whilst away?

Being Eye to Eye with a rare Mountain Gorilla, in Uganda.

I paid a 500 US Dollar permit to visit one of world’s most endangered species, the Mountain Gorillas of East Africa. It was worth every cent and one of the most touching encounters of my life! And I want to do it again, as long as there is the possibility to visit these beautiful creatures in their natural habitat.

Wow! Thank you for that Max.  It was interesting to learn of your travels and adventures! – Couldn’t imagine what it would be like to come face to face with a mountain gorilla! We also love your carrying water bottle tip, a great way to collect a souvenir from each place you visit.
